Like many large corporations, leadership commingles purpose, vision, and mission. As a result, Allstate offers no unifying or powering-up of purpose, only missions erroneously labeled as \u201cOur Shared Purpose.\u201d In short, the good intentions of the \u201cGood Hands People\u201d to state their purpose is a typical strategic mishmash descriptive of what they do but unclear about who they are. Team members remain mired in the momentum of the antiquated CEO Industrial Age mindset of \u201cjust do your job\u201d with no sense of significance or belonging. The more words the more easily it is forgotten; makes it fraught with leadership, operational, and ethical loopholes; and it is irrelevant to day-to-day decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Allstate\u2019s case, Our Shared Purpose lives under the Governance tab and is public relations and true leadership and strategy. Environmental program? Check. Wellness program? Check. Diversity program? Check. Purpose statement. Check. Insincerity isn\u2019t the issue. Seriousness of the matter is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>PVMV are essential leadership and strategy statements for defining and clarifying for those who lead and work within the company culture and create the brand. What Allstate has written here is so typical of safe corporate speak. While \u201cThe words we live by\u201d provides a solid setup, what follows are three mission statements collectively labeled as \u201cOur Shared Purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hand or hands symbolize mission. Use of \u201cAs the Good Hands\u2026 \u201d indicates Allstate has mission statements mislabeled as purpose. Oddly, for \u201cThe Good Hands People,\u201d their forever brand positioning isn\u2019t mentioned. Why is their core slogan truncated to just \u201cGood Hands\u201d? Is this oversight or neglect, or is there some undisclosed shift in the brand at work?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next in \u201cOur Shared Purpose\u201d comes a series of We\u2013They (company-to-customer) outer-directed mission statements. Company-centric language is also indicative of mission statements because it tells others what \u201cwe\u201d do, not who we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe empower customers with protection to help them achieve their hopes and dreams.\u201d<\/strong> Use of \u201cWe empower \u2026 \u201d is old-school, command-and-control, company-centric language implying customers don\u2019t have the power to protect themselves. In this light, it reflects a politely played corporate arrogance. Allstate has ample competitors. Customers have options to exercise their freedom of choice, perhaps switching to those that are customer-centric.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe provide affordable, simple and connected protection solutions.\u201d<\/strong> Here\u2019s a statement of what they do \u2014 a mission with qualifying standards (affordable, simple, and connected) added for good measure. Surprisingly, nothing in \u201cOur Shared Purpose\u201d mentions insurance. This would seem to be a natural place for inclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cWe create opportunity for our team, economic value for our shareholders and improve communities.\u201d<\/strong> Here\u2019s a bland stakeholder benefits statement indicating Allstate understands its broader audiences of team, shareholders, and community. Notice how the audience and respective benefit are segmented.&nbsp;Compare this to an inclusive statement such as: \u201cCreating opportunity, economic value, and improvement for our team members, shareholders, and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note: Allstate\u2019s use of \u201cTeam\u201d is a preferred CLO term over employees. This usage, however, is dropped in favor of \u201cemployee\u201d throughout this website and its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.allstatecorporation.com\/corporate-responsibility\/employee-resource-groups.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">career site<\/a>. The use of \u201cemployees\u201d and \u201cempower\u201d are indicators of the paternal CEO-system embedded in their culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Proposed PVMV:<\/strong> What could be Allstate\u2019s 2-word purpose?&nbsp;Several came to mind, but what\u2019s being proposed is \u201cProtecting Value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insurance, Allstate\u2019s core business, does that. Protecting Value is a prima facia fit. Value is the financial worth of a property or the earning capacity of a person or business, and insurance offers a degree of security to mitigate adverse effects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below the obvious, however, \u201cValue\u201d are those people, things, and experiences held dear. Value is also the hopes and dreams of every customer, shareholder, team member, and those in the community. At an even deeper cosmic or spiritual level, Value translates to the innate dignity and humanity of every person having significance and worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2-word purpose statement alone is energizing. Flanked with and focused on Vision, Missions, and Values for implementation \u2014 it is the unifying power plant for the corporate culture and brand. Here\u2019s the missing edge of individual and organization alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s a consolidation of the reading of the strategic tea leaves at Allstate as an example of an improvement.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purpose: <strong>Allstate exists to serve by Protecting Value<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vision: <strong>The Good Hands People<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Missions (all stakeholders):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Securing hopes and dreams<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Creating wealth-building opportunities<\/strong><\/li><li><strong>Delivering affordable, simple, and connected insurance and financial solutions<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.allstatesustainability.com\/purpose\/our-shared-purpose\/#overview\"><strong>Values<\/strong><\/a>: The Allstate values are screen captured below. Suggesting specific values is beyond the scope of this instructional analysis. Here\u2019s a problematic setup for unending failures and growing dissension in the ranks. Without a compensating value such as grace or forgiveness, the company culture will eventually turn on itself. Worse, Allstate states integrity is \u201cnon-negotiable.\u201d This begs the question, \u201cIntegrity \u2026 based on whose and what standard?\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warning \u2014 controversial statement coming! \u201cInclusive Diversity &amp; Equity\u201d is a necessity only in the CEO-run businesses systemically dehumanizing people by using derisive terms such as \u201cemployee,\u201d \u201chuman resources,\u201d or \u201chuman capital.\u201d Either all people are respected for their innate dignity and worth, or no people are respected. The Good Hands People are, unfortunately, in good company when it comes to fumbling this ball because the majority of the Fortune 500 use the same pejorative terms to describe people with souls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further undermining this \u201cvalue\u201d is the use of \u201cunique identities.\u201d Race, gender, religion, sexual preference, political party, and such are identifiers, not identity. Identifiers are on the outside of a person. Identity lives on the inside and is informed by a personal 2-word purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCollective Success\u201d harkens back to Orwell\u2019s book <em>Animal Farm<\/em> warning of Karl Marx. Giving Allstate the benefit of the doubt, their choice of words in this third value is clumsy at best. Taken at face value, however, and with \u201cIntegrity being non-negotiable,\u201d this is a clearly stated telltale sign of an oppressive regime subjugating individuals to the greater good. Contrast this to the CLO-approach where \u201ccollaborative success\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/onpurpose.me\/are-you-serving-the-greater-good-or-the-common-good\/\" target=\"_blank\">common good<\/a>\u201d are the standards for stakeholder success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Summary<\/strong>: Allstate means well, but, like so many large corporations, it is stuck in the momentum of the past and just painting over its mid-20<sup>th<\/sup> Century mindsets by checking the boxes of fashionable governance and political correctness. These are signs of managing, not leading.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Words are powerful tools in the hands of creators<\/strong>. For organizational leaders, the words Purpose, Vision, Missions, and Values form the core expression of corporate governance, culture, service, and promise that produce a robust understanding of profit.
